Kabul – 25 July 2021 16.11 – Over 22,000 Afghan families have fled their homes to escape the fighting in the former Taliban bastion of Kandahar, official sources said today.
Since early May, violence has escalated in several provinces, including Kandahar, after insurgents launched a massive offensive just days after US-led foreign forces began their final withdrawal, taking dozens of districts and crossings. “In the past month, fighting in Kandahar has resulted in the displacement of 22,000 families,” said Dost Mohammad Daryab, head of the provincial refugee department. “They all moved from the unstable neighborhoods of the city to safer areas.” The fighting continued today on the outskirts of the city of Kandahar, which with 650,000 inhabitants is the second largest city in Afghanistan after Kabul.
