Twenty-five children were rescued this morning before a bus caught fire in the tunnel along the north lane of the Superstrada 36 that connects Lecco to the province of Sondrio.
The accident occurred at the height of Lierna (Lecco) and could have had serious consequences if the driver had not noticed that something was wrong. He managed to stop and let the kids, coming from the province of Como, get off and put them in safety before the flames devoured the vehicle.
Five fire brigade teams from the Lecco and Bellano detachment intervened on the spot, extinguishing the flames and moving the vehicle to a safe area.None had to resort to the ambulance sent by the 118 operations center.
Seven of the twenty-five children rescued were still taken to hospital for examination. They would have inhaled smoke but their condition is of no concern. The north lane of the SS36 was reopened to traffic around 1pm, once the rescue, recovery of the vehicle and surveys were completed. The bus was completely destroyed by the flames.
